The competition consists of designing a constructed landscape for Hackney Cooperative Development’s Pop-Up Theatre in Gillett Square, Dalston. The proposed design is to be classified as temporary works and is conceived to enhance the specific function of an outdoor cinema as well as the existing commercial program already on site. The proposed design is a shell composed of clusters of recycled tubes. The method in which the tubes are clustered is determined using computational techniques whereby the angle and spacing between the tubes is used to evolve the overall shape of the cinema as well as its architectural qualities (visibility, sound quality and lighting).

The design of the Pop-Up Cinema accommodates the following:

Cinema Screen Armature:
The cinema screen is 6100mm x 4570mm and is located on the north side of the square, with projection from the first floor of the building to the south. The screen is designed to be stored on-site.
Seating Area:
The seating area fits approximately 200 people.
Stage:
The circular shape of the seating area leaves an empty central area which could occasionally serve as the stage.
Canopy:
The canopy structure provides shelter to the seated viewers. Its lower part is supported at existing anchoring locations in the ground.
